THE GREEN CITADEL

Nowadays, the face of Magdeburg isn't only defined by its medieval monuments and baroque facades but also by its modern architecture, for example the Hundertwasser project called the Green Citadel. In the course of the transformation of Magdeburg's Cathedral Square, one of buildings of old German Democratic Republic - a communist state during the cold war period - was replaced by an innovative project from the artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This architecturally complex and unique ensemble includes apartments, a hotel, shops, cafés and a nursery school. Hundertwasser called his big pink project an “oasis for humanity and nature in a sea of rational houses”. A only see to believe masterpiece. Behind it is the Dome Square and the landmark Cathedral with two spires, which interior and courtyard can be visited. Further in direction to the Elbe River is the Bastion Cleve, the southeastern end of the former fortress of Magdeburg, and the Kriegerdenkmal hidden deep into the middle of the park. Both monuments enjoy a nice location in front of the Elbe and look well-restored. Magdeburg's activities and sights cannot only be circumcised to the Cathedral area but also along the river. On the way north, the Tower and Museum Kiek in de Köken will be visible from far away and provides the perfect height for some idyllic photos. After the Ernst-Reuter-Allee bridge, on the left side, you'll see the St. Johannis Church and a bit further into town the Old Market Square, where the golden Magdeburger Reiter still stands. If you decide to walk extra steps until you reach the historical Schiffsmühle, and old ship's windmill, on the opposite side there's a church complex composed by the Walloner Church, the Sankt-Petri Church and Magdalene's Chapel.
