THE BAMBI TOWN

Nara is definitely the city where a picture is worth a thousand words. Without a doubt my favourite place in all Japan, Nara was the first capital and the city where powerful Buddhist monasteries grew before. Due to a serious threat to the government, the capital changed to Nagaoka a few years later. Now famous for its deers and a gigantic park, the area enjoys such a calmness and grace that make visitors feel welcome and one with nature. The deers wander freely between the city and the park and are pretty much used to people. You can feed them with special cookies bought in the park and that's it. Please don't give anything else! Inside Nara's Park, ancient shrines and the Tōdai-ji Temple with Japan's largest bronze Buddha statue are open for visit. A nice panoramic view can also be attained from the top floor of Nara's Prefectural Office building, located just outside the Park and behind the Kōfuku-ji Temple and its Five Storied Pagoda. Further afield, there's not that much to witness except more Buddhist temples and the Heijõ Palace Remains, which in my opinion are not worth the time.
