The small town of Hikone located on the shore of Lake Biwa is a lost pearl in Japan and reachable by train about 1,5 hours from Kyoto. I would simply recommend a day-trip to visit the main Castle and the surrounding garden and canals, but if you wish you can also walk and explore the lake area.
