THE VIKING BURIAL MOUNDS

I arrived in Uppsala with the idea of only visit the ancient viking burial grounds and at the end I was surprised by a vibrant old town with nice-looking buildings and monuments. The Cathedral located next to the Fyris River and the main shopping area is something else. Its interior shows some kind of sacred art exhibition, with videos and LEDs, instead of the normal boring paintings and crafts. The height of its two towers stands out from the rest of city's outline and is visible even from Uppsala's Castle when you are beside the famed Gunilla Bell. The Castle grounds are as expected far-reaching, including in its green perimeter a cemetery, the Linneanum or Orangerie, and part of the university. Although the weather was not in its finest, I noticed that the city is really vivid and clean, decorated with flowers everywhere and people riding the bicycles instead of a fully chaotic traffic. That part you see when you take the bus to Gamla Uppsala or also known as the Viking Burial Mounds, about 20min from the centre. On site, besides the mounds there's a visitor's information centre and a church with cemetery. The actual place where the vikings were buried is marked with an informative sign but cannot be visited.
