WT008 - HIPPIE HIPPIE TOWN

The arrival in Pushkar was easy and my expectations were pretty high, mostly because of the things I heard about it from other travellers we met on the way. That was a big mistake. Pushkar is mainly for three kinds of people - Pilgrims, Hippies and standard Tourists - and you'll understand why just by walking further into town. Like Varanasi, Pushkar is a holy city with a large lake in its centre and about 500 buildings around it, that together serve as a sacred shore temple with bathing pools for pilgrims.

The access to the lake can be done by its many entrances, where also a donation is implied. Most temples in Pushkar date from the 18th century and later, due to Muslim conquest in the area that destroyed many sacred places. Because of its Hindu roots and believes, the consumption of meat, alcohol and eggs is completely forbidden. Likewise, taking photos in the lake area is also not allowed. Besides the Lake Pushkar, the city is a big touristic hub where many foreigners (hippies) also live. A variety of shopping streets, with many international branded articles, Italian restaurants, also a German bakery, and different kinds of street food stalls transform the city in a commercial and capitalist jungle.

The best thing to do here is probably to take the cable car until you reach the Savitri Mata Temple and observe the city from far away and into the sunset. At the mountaintop, your new monkey friends will be there to greet you.

Tip: La Pizzaria.
