WT007 - THE BLUE CITY

Jodhpur is well-known for being the Blue City in Rajasthan but don't get fooled about the city's size (old and new part together) and chaotic rhythm. The Blue part is considered the old Jodhpur and stays hidden behind the Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India. It was built around 1460 and is located 125m above the city. Its imposing thick walls enclose many palaces and courtyards which can be visited anytime in the year for the price of 600 INR+100 INR (about 9 EUR) for the camera, which is quite touristic and expensive for Indian standards. But even so, you can get some historical background and easily cross the Fort until you reach the Blue City. From there on the pandemonium starts again, so choose the quieter residential streets to walk instead of the ones with traffic (tuk tuks are simply crazy).

Walk and visit the area until you find the Clock Tower, a popular landmark that a offers a viewpoint. Beside it is the Sadar Market, which is perfect for a typical wild Indian shopping spree.

On the opposite side of town is the Umaid Bhawan Palace. Partly hotel and museum, and completely surrounded by high class buildings, the palace can be seen from the Fort from a long distance. Its visit require an entrance fee of 100 INR (1,25 EUR), which also includes the museum part.

Tip: not so famous as the fort, but also interesting to visit - the Jaswant Thada - is located just on the way up to the fort and contains a big piece of history from Jodhpur.
