Varanasi is regarded as the spiritual capital of India and a major religious hub. Located in the Uttar Pradesh state and on the banks of the Ganges River, the city draws in many Hindu pilgrims who come to bath in its sacred waters and take part in the funeral rites. Probably the most famous topic about the city, and one that tourists should respect, is the 24/7 cremation of bodies in the Manikarnik Ghat. In plain sight, piles of wood are stacked for burning hundreds of bodies of the old and sick patients from the nearby hospice. According to the locals, the fire is sacred and burns since the time of Shiva, never had been extinguished. Due to that fact, many decide to spend their last days and die in Varanasi. After the cremation, the ashes and sometimes personal possessions are thrown into the river. Dogs, cows and goats can be seen wandering around and alongside the family members and also spectators, who participate indirectly in the ceremonies. It is in deed an impressive and soulful vision!!! Besides the rites, the city has deep architectural roots and along its winding streets you are able to find close to 2000 temples dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva.
We were lucky enough to visit Varanasi at the same time as the French President Emmanuel Macron. The usual dirty streets got cleaned and closed to traffic, monuments got flower decorations and the river was for a short time liveable (except where the funerals took place). At the end of the day, everyone came together in the Ganges and took part in the celebrations.
Note: avoid giving donations and do not pay any kind of "fine" for taking photos.
