A TOWN MADE OF STONES

Monsanto, a dream town made of stones where you'll find a life of silence and tranquility. It is pretty much still unknown to most tourists but its charm is taking the best of it and gaining more visits every year. Located in the Idanha-à-Nova region and about 1 hour by car from Castelo Branco, the next big city, Monsanto shows that living in another century is now in vogue. Best known as Portugal's oldest village, its houses, adapted to the mountaintop terrain of 2486m above sea level, date back to the 16th century and are built in granite stones and sometimes below gigantic boulders. Just this uncommon fact plus its location makes a visit worth it.

Tip: try the restaurant "Petiscos e Granitos".

Around Monsanto, many other villages are a worth a peek - Idanha-à-Nova, Alcains, Idanha-à-Velha, Belmonte, Sortelha, etc., not forgetting the International Natural Park Tejo divided between Portugal and Spain.
